I am posting to ask for advice: what are the chances of healing inguinal hernia without operation? I do not doubt this is possible, but as someone recently diagnosed wonder of the likelihood of achieving it. I have seen reference made to eight stories of individuals in the forum who have managed this. Is there an update on this figure?

My story: suspected smallish inguinal hernia in Dec 15 and visited GP, who packed me off to a specialist. I ordered flat-pad supports and started pilates instruction straight away on basis of information on the site and have changed my diet to minimise bloating. I might have to take a first decision about surgery or not sooner than I anticipated given that NHS has to treat within 18 weeks and the breathing and thinking space of the 12-month waiting lists I thought I would be on are a thing of the past.

Ready to ask my first questions now. I can see the attraction of watchful waiting but am told that in follow-ups to the much-cited watchful waiting study of 2006 most switch to surgery in the end? So what are the chances of non-surgical cure?

I am desperate to avoid being operated on if at all possible.

Anders;

You made your post just about a year ago and I am interested in knowing what has happened. I just recently suffered my hernia and am also looking to heal it non-surgically.

Thanks.

If you are young and healthy and willing to make important lifestyle changes, and your hernia is relatively small, then I suspect your chances of healing without surgery are better, although my hernia specialist was very skeptical about the chances.

If you are confident about your doctor and have to make a choice, then surgery is a completely viable and relatively safe option.

I had the same inguinal surgery 5 years ago with zero regrets

Good luck
